Yes, I know, it’s Friday and I’m supposed to have a new
author for you. Oops, sorry, I don’t and I guess it is as much the fault of
Fate as anything else. I’ve already told you about my Wednesday; well Thursday
was no better. Arrived at the Dr.’s office for my check-up at 9:15, got in to
see the doctor at 11:15, got home for lunch at noon.
Now you might think I would get some work done in the
afternoon. Wrong! I picked up the material for a new bed frame and carried it
to my small work area under the house. As I stepped inside I heard a small
explosion and gushing water. The main water line coming into the house had just
popped off the valve. Aaahhhhh!!!!!
Okay, I shut it off at the valve then we started to gather
as many containers to hold water as we could. I’d turn it on and off to fill
them. See, nothing done Thursday. Friday we got the water line fixed and the
all the pots etc. cleaned and back on the shelves by mid-afternoon. I then
walked the dogs and that takes care of my available time for today.
So, that leaves me to find something entertaining for you
folks. How about another small excerpt from Assassin of Nova.
Rathbone stood watching the old ship lift off and fade into
the evening sky. With a deep sigh he turned to the endless acres of junk piled
just behind where he stood. As he turned a ragged woman scurried away from her
hiding place, but she stumbled and fell at his feet. Holding out her hands
defensively, she cowered there on the ground. “Please don’t kill me,” she
begged.
“Now why would I want to do that?” he asked, a grin playing
at the edges of his mouth.
“You’re a soldier; soldiers always try to kill us. We hide,
but they do find and kill most of us.”
“I’m not a soldier anymore, so I have no reason to kill you;
any of you, so you can all come out of hiding.” At that several others stood
and brandished crude weapons.
“We won’t share the food;” declared one man, “there’s not
enough to feed a man your size. We only grow enough for ourselves.”
“Now that presents a problem,” replied Rathbone. “You see,
if you won’t share the food with me, then I have to find my own. The easiest
thing would be to eat one of you. Hell, if I’m stuck here long enough, I’ll
probably have to eat the lot of you.”
They were horrified at that; the men edging closer together,
fingering their crude weapons. The woman laughed as she regained her feet.
“That’s the idea, big fella; I’ll help you. Let’s start with him, he’s the
fattest.” She cackled again then her voice evened out with a note of command in
it. “Of course we will share the food with him. He’s a human being; we will
share.”
Well, sadly, that’s all I’ve got for you today. Sometimes
this rural living gets in the way of making a living, if you get what I mean.
Hopefully next week will show more progress.
Meanwhile, let me know how you’re making out; I love hearing
from you. Yes, misery loves company. Tee hee Joy loves to be shared too, ya
know. J
